On the remote island Ambon, we implemented an innovative new collection model based on source segregation (2000 households), community-based collection points and a compactor truck to transport the waste. A new waste sorting facility was designed with mixed waste sorting and semi-mechanisation of the internal material transport.
What's great about it?
- 2-4 times more efficient transport and improved safety, ergonomics and hygiene through closed and automatically lifted bins.
- Collection points with coloured bins for source segregation, built from local sustainable materials.
- While hesitant at first, communities are embracing the new collection points, asking for more.
