CLIENT: RIVER WASTE COLLECTION ORGANIZATION

An organisation that is collection waste from a river in Guatemala is looking for solutions to sort and valorise this waste. But river waste is a difficult stream to sort, as the waste is mixed and entangled with organic waste, sand and stones. In a ‘Minimum Viable Product’ sorting setup, SweepSmart is implementing an improved sorting lay-out, including testing ways to support the manual sorting with a shaking sieve. What's great about it? • Pioneering solutions to improve and mechanise river waste sorting at a small scale with minimum investments • The learnings of the MVP can be incorporated into a large-scale sorting set-up to sort the majority of the waste removed from the river.

SweepSmart did a design & feasibility study for an organisation that is collecting waste from a river in Malaysia to develop solutions for sorting and recycling the waste from the river, an extremely difficult waste stream to sort due to its low value and high level of contamination and entanglement. What's great about it? • First of its kind study in semi-mechanised river waste sorting • Detailed trials performed on-ground to test different sorting hypotheses • Three innovative scenarios for sorting facilities developed to fit with different investment capabilities and appetites

With the mission to give the waste pickers a better price for the waste they collect, we set out on a new endeavour with Hasiru Dala Innovations: to bring waste directly from the waste pickers and collectors to the recyclers, in order to give them a better margin. CLIENT & OPERATOR: Recovered Indonesia (PT Million Limbah Indonesia), SweepSmart

Together with Indonesian plastic recycler Reco (Recovered Indonesia), SweepSmart is developing a large-scale mixed waste processing facility, that can sort and process 330 Tons of mixed waste per day (serving 400.000 people) into recyclables, compost, Refuse-Derived Fuel and landfill cover, thereby reducing up to 90% of waste that would otherwise be sent to landfill. Plastic Whale fishes plastic from Amsterdam's canals, with boats from, huh, the fished plastic! They want to bring their creative circular concepts to upcoming economies, starting with a circular plastic business model in West Africa, from collection to recycled products. Chintan is a internationally awarded non-profit that enables proactive participation of the informal recycling sector in waste management at Delhi NCR. They convert waste into social wealth by creating and facilitating green jobs, research and advocacy, organizing the informal sector and eliminating child labour in the sector. ​ What's great about it? • Completely new centre with capacity of 10 tons/day • Double sorting line with hopper in the ground, enabling waste to be shoved in without lifting • Chintan was the first organisation we met in India, making our story come full circle!

UNDP India and Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages (HCCB) have joined hands to collect and recycle plastic and provide better livelihoods to waste workers to support HCCB in their Extended Producers’ Responsibility (EPR) obligations. Bangalore Municipality contracted SweepSmart to upgrade 10 Dry Waste Collection Centers within the City, in which SweepSmart converts the centers to modern and efficient Smart Waste Centers with new equipment, rebuilding, processes and a dashboard. ​ What's great about it? • Upgrading 10 out of 165 centers in Bangalore: ramping up Bangalore’s waste infrastructure to full scale source segregated waste handling • Unique partnership with governments from two nations: Bangalore Municipality, Karnataka State and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs • Centers managed by waste pickers as independent entrepreneurs and NGOs

Plastic credits can be a good way to fill part of the Opex gap most waste and recycling companies in upcoming economies are facing, until more formal tax systems develop. We did extensive research of this nascent market, selection of the right standard and providers, and certification with the PCX standard to be closed soon. A Smart Waste app was developed for traceability and efficiency. What's great about it? • The Smart Waste app tracks waste flows from source to recycler, enabling full transparency for plastic credits and better operational management in each step • Assessed 6 different Plastic Credits Standards and ±15 Plastic Credits traders in detail and mapped them on the 11 on-ground waste value chain models

On a mission to STOP plastic pollution, Systemiq is setting up waste collection and segregation in this port town with a wasted beach. We provided technical support in setting up the facility and way of working, including a new design conveyor belt! It shows the scalability of our model to other countries​. ​ What's great about it? • Segregated door-to-door collection of all waste at households • Indonesian suppliers found for conveyor belt and baler • New conveyor belt designed and installed within 2,5 months • Systemiq is scaling up this model across Indonesia‍

While a lot of waste was already source-segregated at Electronics City, ELCITA they needed ​to take it to the next level. Thus E-City Segregrates was born, which is a complete approach to support the companies, including the right tools, coaching, communication and a segregation dashboard. ​ What's great about it? • Ten pilot companies coached for 3 months • Full package of tools including posters, stickers and coloured bins • Segregation improved more than 20% on average, with some heroes achieving more than 75% recycling!

CLIENT: Electronics City Industrial Township Authority (ELCITA)

This wonderful facility set up by frontrunner ELCITA was a great first pilot location. Together with ELCITA, I Got Garbage and the operator, we implemented a conveyor belt, new site lay-out and processes, collection app and dashboard. ​ What's great about it? • Collecting up to 9 ton segregated waste per day at 80+ companies • First conveyor belt and dashboard for this kind of facility in India • Service quality up to 98% after 2 weeks due to new scheduling & tracking system

CLIENT: BBMP(Bangalore Municipality)

With a former waste picker running a centre set up by the municipality, this is a great model to replicate. The centre was completely upgraded including rebuilding, storage platform, conveyor belt and baler within 3 months thanks to great partnering with Hasiru Dala and BBMP. ​ What's great about it? • Independent waste picker team trained in managing a small factory • Capacity tripled from 1.25 ton per day to 4 ton per day • Upgrading 10 more BBMP centres based on this example

SweepSmart conducted a gap analysis in the waste management system for two Wipro campuses at Electronic City, analyzing their waste generators (offices, canteen, etc.), existing methods of handling waste and proposing solutions from improved efficiency measures to better a segregation and logistic system. ​ What's great about it? Wipro is front-runner in taking responsibility for their waste. SweepSmart advised ambitious projects to become even better: • Improving source segregation and on-site processing • Data monitoring across campuses to benchmark and share best practices • Bringing awareness on zero waste back to their employees’ homes!

Mr. Green Africa is a Kenyan company collecting hard plastics from 11 different collection points and hubs to sort, flake, wash, pelletise and sell to recyclers, including food-grade packaging. Due to commercial success, they were facing bottlenecks in their process having to slow down sourcing as the site was overflowing with materials.

CLIENT: MR. GREEN AFRICA

Mr. Green Africa is a Kenyan company collecting hard plastics from collection points and hubs to sort, flake, wash, pelletise and sell to recyclers, including food-grade packaging. They were planning to scale up to a larger recycling factory supported by a best-in-class sorting hub, and decentralised collection hubs. SweepSmart supported them in the design of the new sorting and collection hubs. What's great about it? • Integration with plastics recycling for the optimum plastic waste sorting and preprocessing inputs into the recycling process • Possibility for food-grade recycling and dealing with a variety of different plastic input scenarios, from low- to high-value plastics

WWF’s Plastic Smart Cities program is an initiative to support cities and coastal areas worldwide to take bold action to stop plastic pollution. SweepSmart supported WWF Thailand with a feasibility study for a plastic Material Recovery Facility in Surat Thani. What's great about it? • The Surat Thani city had limiting existing waste management players, so creative solutions had to be found to start a movement there • The Surat Thani mayor was very interested to implement solutions to implement a source-segregated waste management system

On the remote island Ambon, we implemented an innovative new collection model based on source segregation (2000 households), community-based collection points and a compactor truck to transport the waste. A new waste sorting facility was designed with mixed waste sorting and semi-mechanisation of the internal material transport. Founded by McKinsey, Delterra foundation has successfully built the capacity of decentralised Material Recovery Facilities (TPS3Rs). SweepSmart supported them to develop a new waste management operating model for the entire Badung regency, including modelling 6 scenarios of small- to large-scale sorting and composting solutions for trade-offs in economies of scale versus logistic costs, and 20 detailed designs. What's great about it? • Unique insights and modelling tool on ideal-scale processing of the different streams - to be scaled within Indonesia and beyond! • The model adds responsible processing of organic waste (50-60% of the waste) and expands waste mgt services to all 600.000 people in Badung in 3 years
